Recipe: how to cook Chinese food, Tang Yuan_snack

Tang Yuan is a traditional Chinese snack, originated from the Song Dynasty. In the north of China, people named it Yuan Xiao and have it as a Lantern Festival food. Meanwhile, people in the south of China call it Tang Yuan and have it in the Spring Festival.

There are many flavours, such as black sesame, peanuts, red bean, haw, etc. In the south of China, people wrap the stuffing with glutinous rice dough, but in the north, the traditional way is rolling the filling in the glutinous rice powder. For easy, people normally use the south way or buy it from supermarket directly.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 250g glutinous rice powder
  • 160–190g hot water
  • 130g cooked black sesame
  • 35g cooked or roasted peanut
  • 45g sugar
  • 30g butter or lard oil
  • 35g lard oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: ground the black sesame into powder, melt the butter, crumb the peanut with a rolling pin.

Step 2: mix evenly black sesame powder, sugar, lard oil, butter and peanut.

Step 3: divide the filling into the 10g ball each and put in the fridge to let it solid and firm.

Step 4: pour hot water into glutinous rice powder.

Step 5: knead it into a smooth dough.

Step 6: make the dough into the 17g ball each.

Step 7: press the dough ball and put the stuffing in the centre.

Step 8: wrap it into a ball.

if you wrap it in the way of the north of China. you could do in the following method instead of step 7 and 8:

Step 7: roll the stuffing ball in the glutinous rice powder, let the powder cover the stuffing.

Step 8: soak the ball into the water, and roll in the powder again. repeat the step until the stuffing is totally wrapped by powder. you could keep it in the freezer.

Step 9: boil the water.

Step 10: put yuan xiao and stir it lightly.

Step 11: add some cold water after it is boiling.

Step 12: turn off the heat after the yuan xiao float up. DONE ❕
